8 Reasons You Should Move To Australia
Thinking about a big move to australia? Let’s dive in.
Moving to Australia will be one of the most daunting yet exciting adventures you’ll ever embark on in your life. For most of us, Australia is one of the farthest countries you could visit (strictly speaking, as a European), and one of the many questions I often face when people find out I chose to make the move Down Under, is “why would you move to Australia? It’s so far away from everything!” — You are totally right there mate!
From pristine beaches to a higher quality of life, there are plenty of reasons you may be thinking about making the move to Australia and in this article, I’m going to share some of the top reasons you should consider moving to Australia, even just for a while.

1. Australia has an incredible climate
The weather is one of the top reasons that people consider moving to Australia. It’s known for its beach lifestyle and year-round sun, but that’s not the reality for a lot of people who live in Australia. Australia is HUGE. Since Australia is almost the same size as Europe, it’s important to carefully consider which region you move to, depending on the type of weather you prefer!
If you move to a city like Darwin, expect warm, dry winters but hot, wet summers. Move to Hobart, and you may even see snow! I chose to live somewhere in the middle (near Sydney), and while summer can be a bit rainy due to summer being the wet season, it’s mostly perfect all year round. Living near Sydney gives me consistent blue skies and minimal rain, which works well for my active lifestyle. I once had a winter’s day where it was 25 degrees Celsius. Take that, England!
Fun fact: On average, London has around 58 days of sun per year compared to Sydney at around 110.
2. Live a slower paced lifestyle down under
The world knows Australia as friendly and laid back and I can certainly agree with that statement. Aussies ease into their day with beach walks, surf and delicious coffee. Over 80% of Australians live by the coast and I could put my money on it that it’s the reason they have such a relaxed approach to life.
Life just feels still, peaceful and quiet on this side of the hemisphere. I used to live a fast-paced 9-5 back in the UK and it wasn’t untill I moved down under that I noticed that Aussies have a slower pace of life that I really appreciate. I spend most mornings at the beach until I start work and usually end the day back at the beach by going for a swim. That being said, you can certainly find a busier lifestyle in bustling cities like Melbourne and Sydney!
3. a move to Australia could be a fresh start
If you are reading this article, chances are you’re already at the cusp of wanting to make that leap and move abroad. There’s no feeling more free than moving to the other side of the world to live a completely different life. You can switch careers, move to the beach, live in a van and you never know, maybe you may just meet the love of your life and go on some whirlwind adventures.
Moving to Australia will give you a fresh perspective on life, open up new opportunities and a fresh start in life (if that’s what you are seeking). Life can get tough sometimes and having the option to reset in a country where no one knows you may just be the antidote you need for that burning feeling of change you’re desiring.

4. Aussies are known to live a higher quality of life
Quality of life is a major factor in people wanting to move to Australia for the long term. Australia is consistently ranked as a country with a thriving economy, great healthcare and a top education system, making it a no-brainer for people in search of a better life!
It’s visible on the streets, the cities are clean, people are smiling and although others would argue it’s an expensive country. You truly get quality for what you pay for in Australia. Other factors that give Australia a greater quality of life include: safety, pristine nature and a better work-life balance.
5. Moving to Australia doesn’t have to be forever
Moving to Australia doesn’t have to be forever… It could just be a temporary move to get out of the rat race of life and be thrown into a slower pace of living. At the time of writing this article, I’ve spent 3 glorious years in Australia and I know deep down that if I ever choose to move to a different country, I will bring my new routines and slower pace of life with me.
Australia teaches you to enjoy nature, be friendly and approach life in the slow road. While it may not be the end goal for you, I strongly encourage you to try it – even for 6 months. By taking the plunge and moving to Australia, you can dip your toe in and see if you like what this country has to offer. You might find that you love it and want to stay longer, or you could enjoy your time there and feel ready to head back home when it’s over.
6. Australia is king of adventures
I have a confession to make. Before moving to Australia, I was scared of every little bug, loud noise and I was terrified of going hiking. Since moving to Australia, I’ve been up close to snakes, camped in the outback with no tent and swam with crocodiles (don’t worry they were just freshies). If you are open to it, moving to Australia will throw a lifetime of adventures at you. From weekend hikes to long trips and travelling overland in some of the most remote places on earth.

A typical weekend in Australia usually involves some sort of swim at a local beach, a hike and trying to find delicious coffee in a neighbouring town. This is the polar opposite of my typical weekend in England, which would involve me sitting inside and not making the most of nature because of the bad weather.
7. Increased Job prospects
Moving to Australia will open up fresh job opportunities that you didn’t even know existed. There are a few factors that make this such a strong point of moving to Australia. Firstly, the wages are incredibly high compared to most countries.
I used to work as a Social Worker earning around $65,000 in the UK, but in Australia, I could secure a job in the same field that would pay me around $100,000 -$120,000. It’s a huge difference, and while I don’t currently work as a Social Worker, I know that if I needed to, I can secure a good job that pays well!
A lot of travellers who come to Australia aren’t always in search of the next big career move. Sometimes moving to Australia means taking on very different jobs, like moving to the Great Barrier Reef to become a dive instructor or working at a crocodile hotel in the Northern Territory.
There are some pretty cool jobs in Australia and the job market is extremely flexible. Australia has a wild climate, which means some towns operate seasonally. This means you could be working one job in Northern Australia during the winter, but then having to leave because the tourist season is over as the area floods!
8. incredible travel opportunites
I first visited Australia as a young backpacker travelling the infamous East Coast trail while on a gap year in 2020. I enjoyed my time during the 6-week adventure, but I didn’t feel that drawn to the country itself. It wasn’t until I moved here several years later that I was in awe of how incredibly diverse the country is. From mountains to white sand beaches, ancient rainforests, wildlife and vibrant cities. You could spend a lifetime travelling Australia and still not get bored!

Pair that with the nearby destinations in Asia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, you won’t run out of bucket list destinations for your future travels! I recently visited a tiny country called The Cook Islands, which was a 5-hour flight from Sydney. If I were in the UK, it would be very unlikely for me to even consider a trip to The Cook Islands, as it is such a remote destination!
The Final Verdict: To Move to Australia or Not?
Moving to Australia might just be the adventure you didn’t know you needed and you’ll never truly know until you experience it for yourself. I was 27 when I made the leap and it turned out to be the best decision of my travels.
I didn’t have all the answers or a clear plan, but something drew me back after my first visit.
