Best time of year to visit South West Australia

The Perth to Esperance road trip is an adventure you can do all year round — it really just depends on your travel style. If you want the best shot at good weather (and to know what you’re walking into), here’s the breakdown:

We did this trip in March, and while most days sat around a warm 25 degrees, we did hit a few rainy days where we were genuinely shivering in the campervan at night. I also noticed the wind can get pretty brutal in certain parts of this region — so pack layers no matter what month you go.

How much does it cost to drive from Perth to Esperance?

This all comes down to your travel style. If you’re planning on renting a car and staying in hotels, I’d budget around $200+ per day per person. I did this trip on a budget and worked out that I spent around $100 a day, which covered food, activities, campervan rental, caravan parks, and fuel. I was travelling with a friend so we spent around $100 each per day all in.

How many days do you need?

You could easily spend weeks, even months, exploring the South West coast of Australia. But given the total driving distance is around 2,000km, I wouldn’t recommend anything less than 10 days — any shorter and you’ll feel like you’re driving the entire time.

Here’s how I’d break it down:

When I did this road trip from Perth, I had 14 days, which let me slow down and spend a couple of days in each place rather than rushing through.

Best vehicle to complete the road trip

The two main options for travelling from Perth to Esperance are hiring a car or a campervan. One thing I love about Western Australia is how many free camping sites there are, especially compared to the East Coast of Australia. For me, it made sense to rent a campervan — it saved money on accommodation while letting me choose where to park up each night.

The real benefit of a campervan is flexibility. If you rent a car and stick to hotels, you’re locked into pre-booked stays. My friend and I took each day as it came — some days we just didn’t feel like driving, so we’d stay an extra night at a campsite instead.

If you want to take the adventure up a notch, you could even look at renting a 4×4 to reach some of the more isolated spots along the way.

Is it safe to visit Western Australia?

Australia, in general, is one of the safest countries I’ve visited out of the 55 I’ve explored. That said, it is known for being home to some seriously deadly creatures — snakes, sharks, spiders. I want to reassure you though: it’s very unlikely you’ll actually encounter any of them. If you do spot a snake in the wild, give it space, stay still, and whatever you do, don’t make any sudden movements.

Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:

Ocean Safety

Australia has a way of bringing up strange questions in your mind — you’re looking at one of the most incredible landscapes on earth. Then you remember the ocean here comes with rip tides, sharks, crocodiles, and a whole list of other things to be aware of.

In the South West, the main things to watch for are stingers and sharks. I actually got my first jellyfish sting at Busselton Beach — painful in the moment, but it didn’t last long.

Be aware of rip tides and try to only swim between the flags on beaches you visit. WA waters are known to have more sharks than other parts of the country, so keep that in mind too — though many beaches, like Busselton, have netted areas so you can swim safely.

Driving at Night

Driving at night is totally normal in most countries, but in Australia, it’s actually the most dangerous time to be on the road. Dusk is when wildlife comes out. Stick to driving during daylight hours where you can, since kangaroos will jump out in front of your car and can do some serious damage.

Some of the roads between Perth and Esperance are long, and you will feel isolated at times. Make sure you top up on fuel whenever you can, and always carry water with you.

Perth to Esperance itinerary – day by day breakdown

Now the logistics of completing the Perth to Esperance road trip are out of the way, let me share with you my suggested 10-14 day itinerary.

Day 1: Perth to Busselton (222km)

Depart from Perth and head to Busselton, home to the longest jetty in the southern hemisphere. Spend at least 1 night here, relishing the local vibe, exploring white sandy beaches, and enjoying stunning sunsets. Busselton Jetty is the perfect place to watch the sunset as you swim in the waters below — to avoid jellyfish stings, head to the netted area.

Day 2: Busselton Exploration

Start your day with a scenic morning walk along the jetty and enjoy coffee at Shelter, known for its delicious pizzas. Optionally, return by train after the 1.8km walk. We spent a few nights at Heyscape’s beautiful cabins in Whicher Ridge Winery.

Busselton, Western Australia

After spending the morning in Busselton, head further south to Dunsborough and relax at Meelup Beach for a picnic and swim. Meelup Beach was one of my favourite beaches in the South West — the ocean was so clear and clean.

After spending a few hours here, drive down to Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse. You can pay $5 to enter the lighthouse area, then choose from a few walking trails.

Find a free park-up using WikiCamps, or camp at one of the Tasman holiday parks in the area.

Day 3: Injidup to Margaret River

Take a morning dip at Injidup Natural Spa’s crystal blue waters. The rocky landscape creates a natural spa effect when the waves crash into them, resulting in champagne pools below.

Continue the drive south to explore the Margaret River region, famous for its 200+ vineyards. We visited Cape Mentelle Vineyard — a tasting of 5 different wines is $10, or free if you choose to purchase a bottle.

Choose to stay in Margaret River town, or nearby coastal spot Prevelly.

Day 4: Jewel Cave

Begin your morning with yoga at Gnarabup Yoga Studio, followed by coffee with a view at White Elephant Cafe.

Continue south with a quick visit to Hamelin Bay to see stingrays in their natural habitat. This area is home to many caves which you can explore with a guided tour. We chose to explore Jewel Cave, which cost $26 per person — one of the largest and most beautiful caves in the region.

Ps. You can only visit Jewel Cave on a guided tour. Book your tickets here 👉🏼 Jewel Cave Fully-Guided Tour

You can continue the drive down to Albany or stay the night in a free or paid camp spot. We decided to spend the night at Walpole Rest Point Caravan Park, as we wanted to do a few activities nearby. This was a very peaceful caravan spot with kangaroos jumping around the grounds.

Day 5: Walpole to Albany — Exploring Iconic Landmarks

After a restful night in Walpole, we kicked off the day with a relaxed visit to the Valley of the Giants Treetop Walk. Stroll through the treetops and enjoy the tranquility of the forest while enjoying a coffee.

Continuing our journey, we arrived at Green Pool and Elephant Rock, two iconic spots that left us in awe despite the overcast weather. We couldn’t help but imagine how stunning these places would look under sunny skies.

Denmark is a small town you will pass through — I’d recommend keep driving until you reach Boston Brewing Co, where the stone-baked pizzas and drinks were delicious.

As we made our way to Albany, our next destination was Torndirrup National Park. Here, we took a few minutes to check out The Gap, an impressive viewing platform offering a view of crashing waves below. Both The Gap and The Bridge are accessible, with parking directly in front.

We ended the day at Albany Wind Farm for a breathtaking sunset. Spend the night in Albany to wake up and head straight to the Stirling Ranges.

Day 6: Bluff Knoll and Little Beach

Head to the Stirling Ranges to complete the Bluff Knoll Hike, around 1 hour north of Albany. This hike is a grade 4 and requires some level of fitness due to the many steps — I’d recommend allowing at least 3–4 hours.

After conquering Bluff Knoll, head back to Albany and spend the afternoon relaxing at Little Beach, situated just outside Albany. It’s won several awards for being one of the best beaches to visit in Australia.

Relax as much as possible before the long drive to Esperance. Driving in the dark isn’t recommended in sparse parts of Australia due to wildlife. Spend the night in Albany or Cheynes.

Day 7: Albany to Esperance

Today, we hit the road to complete the 5-hour drive from Albany to the picturesque town of Esperance. Arrive in Esperance in the afternoon and relax around town, play some mini golf, or head to one of the local beaches.

Tip: We visited Esperance in March, just after the summer season, and found all the caravan parks full during this time. We spent several nights at Esperance Pink Lake Tourist Park.

Day 8: Esperance Great Ocean Drive

Spend a full day exploring jaw-dropping beaches such as Blue Haven Bay, Twilight Beach, Observatory Point, and 11 Mile Lagoon. There are no shops or cafes along this drive, so make sure you’ve packed enough snacks to last the full day.

Day 9: Cape Le Grand National Park

Located just an hour’s drive outside Esperance, Cape Le Grand National Park boasts extraordinary beaches that warrant a full day, or even two.

One of the most popular beaches is the iconic Lucky Bay, where you might be lucky enough to spot friendly kangaroos hopping along the white sands. There’s a range of activities to do here, including surfing, swimming, hiking, snorkeling, and 4WD adventures.

Although our 2WD camper van couldn’t access the beach, Lucky Bay’s compact sand provides ideal driving conditions, with many cars parked along the beachfront. Don’t miss the chance to book a stay at the secluded campsite (months in advance if possible) to wake up to the turquoise waters of Lucky Bay.

My favourite spots of the day:

Days 10–14: Slowing Down and Heading Back

I highly recommend dedicating 14 days to this itinerary, because you’re bound to fall in love with the charming towns you’ll encounter and will want to extend your stay in some of them. While it’s possible to squeeze everything into a 10-day trip, you’ll feel rushed.

For instance, during our journey, we spent a total of 3 nights in Busselton, as we fell in love with the atmosphere, peaceful vibes, and the beautiful jetty.

On the final day of your adventure, I suggest making the drive back to Perth via Wave Rock for a quick stop. The driving time is 8 hours for this leg of the journey. If you are lucky enough to have more than 14 days to complete this itinerary, you can slow it down and take your time in each place.

FAQ

Should I get travel insurance on my trip?

Yes, I strongly recommend you purchase travel insurance before any trip overseas. I have tried and tested Safetywings Nomad insurance which is perfect for long term travellers as well as specific trips.

Would 7 days be enough to complete this itinerary?

Yes, but you would spend a lot of time driving. The largest section of the drive is Esperance to Perth which is 8 hours. If you were doing 7 days I’d recommend driving straight to Esperance and working your way back to Perth.

Is the drive suitable for a 2WD, or do you need 4WD anywhere?

This is such a great question! The most travelled South West Australia road is all sealed roads so you wouldn’t need to worry about hiring a 4WD. That being said, you’d have access to even more remote spots in the region with a 4WD.
