From free, budget-friendly adventures to premium experiences that are worth every penny. Whether you’re a solo traveller, couple, or family, this guide will help you make the most of your trip to Rarotonga, Cook Islands.
Free things to do in Rarotonga
There are so many free things to do in Rarotonga, and I honestly wasn’t expecting that. When I visited the Cook Islands, I managed to pack my itinerary with bucket-list experiences that didn’t cost a thing. This is perfect if you’re travelling on a mid-range budget and want to make your money stretch further.
If you’re anything like me, you want the best possible trip without blowing your budget — and the Cook Islands deliver exactly that.

1. Visit Punanga Nui Market (Saturday Market in Rarotonga)
If you happen to be in Rarotonga on a Saturday, Punanga Nui Market is a must! Held every Saturday from 8 am in Avarua, this lively market is one of the most popular things to do in Rarotonga and a great way to experience local Cook Islands culture.
I arrived in Rarotonga early on a Saturday morning, which made it the perfect first stop. Punanga Nui Market was my first impression of life in the Cook Islands, with live music, local food stalls, and plenty of unique handmade gifts.
Top tip: Market stalls start packing up around midday, so aim to arrive early to get the best atmosphere and food options.

2. Hike the Rarotonga Cross-Island Trek (Via The Needle)
The Rarotonga Cross-Island Trek was hands down my favourite day in Rarotonga. This popular trail is graded medium to hard and is best completed from north to south, which most locals recommend.
The hike takes you through lush rainforest and rewards you with the most iconic viewpoint in Rarotonga — Te Rua Manga (The Needle). From the top, you’ll get sweeping views across the island that make the effort completely worth it.
If you’re planning to do this hike, I’ve written a detailed guide to the Rarotonga Cross-Island Trek, including tips and what to expect, which you can read here.

3. Snorkelling in Rarotonga (Best Free Activity)
Did you really visit the Cook Islands if you didn’t go snorkelling in Rarotonga? Learn from my mistake and don’t leave your snorkel at home. It deserves prime real estate in your luggage because it will easily be one of the most used items on your trip.
One of the best things about Rarotonga is how easy and accessible the snorkelling is. The island is completely surrounded by reef. This means you can walk straight off the beach and start spotting tropical fish and marine life just metres from the shore. It’s one of the best free things to do in Rarotonga and perfect for travellers on any budget.
Top tip: Snorkel Hire in Rarotonga – If you don’t have your own snorkel, most hotels in Rarotonga offer snorkel hire by the day or week, and there are also plenty of snorkel rental shops dotted around the island.

4. visit Muri Lagoon (Best Beach in Rarotonga)
My second mistake when visiting Rarotonga? Not staying near Muri Lagoon. During my week-long trip to the Cook Islands, I kept finding myself drawn back here. Muri Lagoon is one of the most beautiful places in Rarotonga, offering a mix of free and paid activities in a stunning setting.
I visited Muri Lagoon on my second full day and spent hours walking along the beach, eating at nearby cafés, and kayaking on the lagoon. From the main beach, you can look out across the turquoise water to the small islands inside the lagoon. At low tide, you can even walk across the other islands.

5. Black Rock Beach (Best Sunset Spot in Rarotonga)
No trip to Rarotonga is complete without visiting Black Rock Beach. While most tourists stop at the viewpoint of the rock itself, I loved wading out and climbing to the end. This gave me an incredible view of the ocean.
Black Rock Beach is an incredible spot to watch the sunset, spot whales during migration season, and even snorkel or dive at high tide. It’s one of the most scenic and memorable locations on the island.

6. Aroa Beach (One of the Best Beaches in Rarotonga)
Aroa Beach is definitely one of the top beaches to visit in Rarotonga. During my island getaway, I made it my mission to explore as many beaches as possible. Aroa beach quickly became one of my favourites. The calm waters make it a safe and enjoyable spot for swimming, while the soft sand and relaxed atmosphere are perfect if you just want to sit back and unwind.

7. Watch the Sunset on the West Coast of Rarotonga
The Cook Islands are home to some of the most stunning sunsets I’ve ever seen. I stayed at Rarotonga Backpackers on the west side of the island, which gave me the perfect spot to enjoy the show every evening.
Visiting in August was especially memorable because it’s whale migration season (July–October). I watched so many whales breaching just beyond the reef while the sun dipped below the horizon. Watching the sunset on the west coast of Rarotonga is truly one of the best free activities in Rarotonga.

8. Watch Planes Land at Rarotonga Airport from the Seawall
One of the most unique free activities in Rarotonga is watching planes land at the island’s airport. To plan your visit, you can check flight schedules online or ask a local, as only a few planes arrive each day. The seawall near the airport is the best spot to get a clear view of incoming flights, making it a fun experience for travellers visiting Rarotonga.

The Best Paid Activities in Rarotonga
While Rarotonga is packed with amazing free activities, there are also plenty of paid experiences worth considering if your budget allows. From adventurous tours to unique local experiences, these activities let you make the most of your time on the island.

9. Hire an E-Bike and Cycle Around Rarotonga
One of the most fun ways to explore Rarotonga at your own pace is by hiring an e-bike. While most accommodations and tour operators offer regular bike rentals, there are a few operators that provide e-bikes, such as Tik-e Tours. You can rent an e-bike for around $50 per day, giving you the freedom to cycle around the island. You can discover hidden beaches and explore local villages without breaking a sweat.

10. Day Tour to Aitutaki from Rarotonga
One of the most epic experiences from Rarotonga is taking a day trip to Aitutaki, the Cook Islands second most popular island. Often called “paradise on earth” on social media. Aitutaki truly lives up to the hype — and I’ve visited some of Australia’s best beaches, so that’s saying something!
While some travellers spend several days on Aitutaki, a day tour from Rarotonga is perfect if you’re short on time. Air Rarotonga offers fully packaged tours that include hotel transfers, return flights, all meals, a guided island tour, and the famous Vaka Lagoon cruise. My personal highlight was visiting One Foot Island — just wait until you see the turquoise water, it doesn’t look real!

11. Scenic Flight Around Rarotonga
For travellers who love breathtaking views, taking a scenic flight around Rarotonga is one of the best ways to appreciate the island’s beauty. While I usually rely on my drone to capture epic landscapes, a 30-minute tour gives you a perspective you can’t get from the ground.
Air Rarotonga operates these scenic flights, letting you soar above turquoise lagoons, lush mountains, and pristine beaches. It’s a paid activity, but one that’s truly unforgettable and perfect for photography lovers or anyone wanting a unique view of the island.

12. Hire a Kayak in Muri Lagoon
While there are plenty of free activities in Muri Lagoon, hiring a kayak is a great paid option if your budget allows. Renting a kayak lets you explore the lagoon at your own pace, discover the small islands within it, and enjoy the turquoise waters up close.
I booked a 3-hour kayak rental for $45 with KiteSup, which gave me plenty of time to take photos, explore the islands, and even enjoy a bahn mi on the beach.

13.Take a Glass Bottom Boat Ride in Muri Lagoon
One of the most popular activities in Rarotonga is a glass-bottom boat ride in Muri Lagoon. The most recommended operator is Captain Tama’s Lagoon Cruise. Nearly every traveller I met suggested this tour.
Although I ran out of time to do it myself, the tour takes you out into Muri Lagoon on a glass-bottom boat, giving you an amazing view of the underwater wildlife. The cruise usually includes lunch on board and offers snorkeling, making it a fun and memorable way to experience the lagoon.
14. Island Nights Evening Show
For a truly immersive cultural experience, don’t miss an Island Nights evening show in Rarotonga. These performances are held at hotels across the island and at Te Vara Nui Village in the Muri Lagoon area. You’ll enjoy vibrant traditional dances, live music, and local storytelling, giving you a close-up look at the Cook Islands’ rich heritage.
15. Sunset Stand-Up Paddleboarding
On my last night in Rarotonga, I booked a sunset stand-up paddleboarding session, and it turned out to be the highlight of my trip. I returned to KiteSup for the evening session, and it’s a relaxing evening activity for families, solo travellers, and couples!
The session starts around 7pm, when you meet at KiteSup to pick up your board and head down to the beach. What made it truly magical was that as the sun set, the lights attached to the bottom of the paddleboards lit up the lagoon, revealing the vibrant underwater wildlife.

16. Visit Te Ara Museum in Muri
Step into the heart of Cook Islands culture at Te Ara Museum in Muri. This charming museum showcases the island’s history. From ancient traditions to modern life, giving you a deeper understanding of Rarotonga and its people. You can also browse unique local gifts to take a piece of the culture home.

17. Volunteer and Walk Dogs at the Rarotonga SPCA
One of the most rewarding ways to connect with Rarotonga is by getting involved in the local community. During my travels, I’ve found volunteering to be an unforgettable experience. It’s a chance to meet locals, give back, and see a destination from a different perspective.
At the Rarotonga SPCA, you can donate supplies, help out, or take the dogs for a walk. It’s a hands-on way to explore the island, spend time with adorable pups, and support a local cause!

18. Wigmore’s Waterfall
Wigmore’s Waterfall is a highlight at the end of the Rarotonga Cross Island Trek. I visited during the dry season, so the waterfall wasn’t at full flow, but it was still stunning and well worth the hike.
If you’re not doing the trek, you can also access the waterfall via Papua Road. There’s a small $5 entry fee per scooter or car. Whether you hike or drive, Wigmore’s Waterfall is a must-see for anyone looking to experience the natural beauty of Rarotonga.

19. Muri Night Market
If you’re wondering why I recommend staying near Muri Lagoon, the Muri Night Market is a big reason why. This bustling market is one of the best food experiences in Rarotonga. It’s open every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 5 PM. Food stalls and trucks serve up local dishes that give you an authentic taste of the Cook Islands.
While many places in Rarotonga accept cards, it’s smart to carry some Cook Islands cash (NZD) for small purchases. I always travel with a Wise card, which allows me to spend in the local currency without the high bank fees!

20. Hire a Car and Do a Self-Drive Tour of Rarotonga
One of the best ways to explore Rarotonga at your own pace is by hiring a car and taking a self-guided tour. I love the freedom of renting a car in a new country — being able to stop for coffee, grab a bite to eat, or spend a few hours relaxing at a beach is such a treat.
During my trip, I set aside a full day to tick off must-visit spots in Rarotonga and revisit some of my favourite places on the island. There are plenty of car rental options, but because the island is small, vehicles can book up quickly, so plan ahead.
While it only takes about 30 minutes to drive around Rarotonga, I spent 8 hours exploring — stopping wherever I wanted, soaking in the scenery, and taking my time to enjoy the island.

21. Raro Safari Tours – Off-Road Adventure
If you’re looking for one of the most exciting things to do in Rarotonga, Raro Safari Tours should be at the top of your list. This off-road 4×4 adventure takes you across the island to hidden spots, lush landscapes, and viewpoints you won’t find on your own.
Along the way, you’ll also learn about Cook Islands culture and traditions, making it a fun and educational experience.

22. Private Turtle and Ray Tour
If you’re visiting Rarotonga, exploring the island’s crystal-clear waters is an absolute must. One of the most memorable experiences is the Private Turtle and Ray Tour, where you can snorkel alongside graceful sea turtles and rays in their natural habitat.
This premium, private adventure is perfect for couples, families, or solo travellers, and you don’t even need to worry about capturing the moment — professional photographers are on hand to document every magical moment of your tour.

When you arrive at your accommodation, you’ll likely receive a Rarotonga bus timetable showing regular routes and stops where you can easily jump on and off. A single ride costs just $5, making it one of the best budget-friendly activities in Rarotonga.
